Cali Gumpel Competes at State Level

After establishing a new school record for the girls’ 5000 meters, Cali Gumpel continued her momentum into the district playoff race.  Cali paced her way to a fifteenth place finish, qualifying her for the regional meet.

Bright and early Saturday, November 4, Cali found herself running past her competition in the regional meet.  Finishing eleventh, Cali earned a ticket on the bus to Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City for the state finals.

Cali kicked things into gear when needed.  She found her stride at just the right time.  Her hard work and the training by Coach Bill Mitchell paid dividends for this young athlete.

Cali is just the second individual in school history to compete at the state level.  Great Job, Cali!

ATHLETES OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER

Amanda Dill set a school record last year in the Girls’ Cross Country program.  This year, she bested that time at the Palm Beach County Cross-Country Championships.  As captain of the team, she encouraged her teammates, diligently prepared herself in the off-season, and led by example.  As Amanda improved her performance, she was a tremendous supporter to her fellow runners.  Illustration of this came when Amanda joined Cali Gumpel for support at the regional meet in Mount Dora.  Further evidence came when Amanda finished her varsity basketball game Friday night, then drove with her dad to cheer on Cali at the 7:30 AM. race the next morning.

Amanda is an example for all athletes and deserving of the Athlete of the Month.  Thanks, Amanda.

Fifth-grade standout Brayden Ivaniszyn assisted the 5th-6th Soccer team to a PACC Championship.  Ivan was a goalkeeper and field player on the undefeated team.  Ivan’s attitude, team play, and ability were beneficial for the championship team.

Ivan scored five goals between the semi-final and final games.  He was a significant part of the team from the first game of the season until the last.

Ivan’s leadership role on the 5th-6th Soccer team made him the ideal winner of the Athlete of the Month for November.  Congratulations, Ivan!

Best Coaches to another Championship – Soccer This Time

Coaches Liz Best and Clary Groenewold have done another wonderful job with their team.  Their seasons-coached to championships-participated ratio is incredible.  In the last two years, they are five and five.

Now, analyze that statistic with the fact that they have not cut any player who has committed to play on their team.  There is no way around stating that these are some good coaches.  While some encouraged them to reduce the thirty-four kids on this year’s soccer team, Clary and Liz were adamant about providing opportunities for everyone.  They hoped all the kids would play, learn, and continue to play.

Certainly, players like Brayden Ivaniszyn and Garrit Griffis increase the odds of winning.  However, Mrs. Best and Miss Groenewold helped develop the skills of all the players.  All of the young athletes participated in the regular season games and even in the championship game.

WCS soundly defeated Berean 3-0 to take home the PACC Championship!  Thanks to all the families and friends who helped cheer the team to victory.

Koepka Takes Boys Back to PACC Championship

Who thought there could be such hubbub at the Middle School level in sports over legitimate players?  New faces on teams and rules infractions created a stir in the PACC.  Unfortunately, one team was forced to forfeit their semi-final victory when a player was ruled ineligible.  While most schools keep a close eye on the conference policies, something was overlooked by one school.

However, neither those distractions nor a loss to Lake Park in the final regular season game was going to keep Bob Koepka from taking his team to the finals.  Lake Park handed the Eagles a big loss and a strong warning at the close of the season.  Coach Koepka used that game as a lesson for their semi-final play-off match.  The boys pounded away against Lake Park in the game that counted.  Bryan Dorsanvil played his best game of the season and minimized the offensive threat of the Crusaders.  Meanwhile, Cody Ballard heard “swish” most of the times he released the ball from his hands.  Cody scored twenty points with four 3-pointers.  Brandon Melvin and Bronson Gatrell fueled the defensive motors and controlled the lanes.

The team fought from start to finish in the semi-final game to earn a 38-30 win and earn entrance in to the PACC Championship game.

This “upset” is not a new concept to Koepka, who took the 2007 team into the championship game after beating undefeated Berean Christian School.

Middle School Basketball PACC All-Star Selections

Girls Basketball Players: Stephanie Weil, Kelby Rothenberg, and Cher Nicholson were selected to the PACC All-Stars.  These girls represented Wellington Christian School proudly during the All-star game on Saturday, December 5.

On the boys’ side: Cody Ballard, Bronson Gatrell, Brandon Melvin, and Trey Callahan were chosen.  Cody Ballard was the winner of the 3-point contest at the event.

Congratulations, athletes, and praise the Lord.

MIAMI HEAT TO TURN LIGHTS OFF FOR VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM

On February 1, the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team will take on Boca Raton Christian School at the American Airlines Arena (AAA).  Following the match-up, the Heat will play the Milwaukee Bucks.  This is one of those rare and treasured opportunities our basketball players will be able to take advantage.

Andres Hortet and Danny Paez will lead the team in an attempt at another Championship title.  En route to a repeat championship game appearance, the experience of playing in a professional stadium is sure to boost their play.

Tickets into the arena will include admission to both games.  Be sure to keep that day open!

CROSS-COUNTRY - “OFF TO THE RACES”

Whoever said, “Anyone can run,” was not talking to a cross-country runner.  Sure, people can move their legs, but in context of competing, not everyone can run.  Think about the last time you moved your feet across a 3.1 mile path.  How much time was consumed during that travel?  To be a state ranked runner, girls must cover that terrain in less than twenty-one and a half minutes.

The Girls’ Cross-Country team is comprised of members such as Cali Gumpel and Amanda Dill who are county-ranked second and eighth for their age, respectively.  These two girls can run.  Captain Amanda Dill has been on the team for the past four years.  Last season, Amanda broke the school record.  This year she ran faster than that mark in the Palm Beach County Championships.

Meanwhile, newcomer Cali Gumpel broke all record-times at the 3rd Annual WCS Invitational.  Unsatisfied with that time, she shattered it four days later at the County Championships.  Cali bested her mark by 48 seconds and finished 11th overall in the county (all schools, all classifications).

The team has their eyes on the district meet in Melbourne in hopes of sending some or all of the runners on to regional competition.

VARSITY BOYS’ SOCCER WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2009-10 Boys’ Soccer team became the first soccer team to go undefeated in the league and to win a league championship.

Going into the season, the goal was obvious – Win the Championship.  Anything less would have been a disappointment.  It was clear; the team had talent – and lots of it.  Coach Techera had a roster that was oceanic in depth of skill.

The four-goal margin of victory in the championship game was not a surprise.  Early on, the Eagles put pressure on Weinbaum Yeshiva School.  There was so much pressure that the opposition tried to use two goalies.  Unfortunately for them, the referee saw it and issued the rarely-seen Blue Card.  The card resulted in a penalty shot.  Danny Paez capitalized and provided a one-goal advantage.  In addition, the charged player was disqualified for the remainder of the game.

A few minutes later, Pedro Assakura blistered a knuckle-ball shot from twenty yards into the back of the net.  Yeshiva countered with a goal, but the match was dominated controlled by the Eagles.  Joey Coleman maneuvered the ball through the penalty area twice to notch two more for the champions.  In addition, Danny Paez blasted a perfectly placed shot from forty yards to add to the lead.

Many words could be written on several players.  The stingy senior defensive players, the solid wing mid-fielders, and other members contributed to the team’s memorable successful season.  Congratulations to our Eagles!

ATHLETES OF THE MONTH - OCTOBER

Middle School Soccer extraordinaire, Juan Matute scored twenty goals in eleven games.  His statistical contributions were coupled with his positive attitude and “Teamwork” approach.

Juan represented WCS and himself fantastically in the Palms Athletic Christian Conference (PACC) All-Star game.  He scored both of his team’s goals in the contest.

We can be sure to see a lot of exciting play from Juan in the years ahead!

Mackenzie Leeder was also chosen as a PACC Volleyball All-Star.  Her hustle and consistent serves helped WCS reach the PACC Championship.  Mackenzie repeatedly illustrated her desire to win by going for every ball.  Her determination and ability have earned her Athlete of the Month honors for October.

Kevin Goff Leaves for College as One of the Best Pitchers in Florida

Kevin Goff, 2009 Golden Eagle Award Recipient, Palm Beach Post Baseball - 1st Team All-County Selection, and Sam Budnyk Award Finalist, added one more feather to his baseball cap before leaving for college.  The Florida Sports Writers selected the esteemed pitcher as one of the four best pitchers in the state (Classifications 1A through 3A).

The valedictorian and ace pitcher packed his pens, computer, ball, and hat to expand his knowledge and collect more strikeouts at Haverford College.  Haverford College is one of America’s leading liberal arts colleges and has been classified as one of the “most selective” colleges by U.S. News and World Report.

Kevin has the opportunity to further his studies while demonstrating his abilities on the diamond.  Kevin attended Wellington Christian School since sixth grade and was a starter on the baseball team since seventh grade.  While enrolled at WCS, Kevin demonstrated admirable character on the field and in the classroom.  His selection to this honor is well deserved.

We pray the best for Kevin and all of our alumni.  May God richly use and allow them to be salt to the world in each vocation and opportunity they have been placed.

1st Place Middle School Volleyball Set for Playoffs

Being in the lead is not uncommon for players under the tutelage of Liz Best and Clary Groenewold.  These coaches are not new to volleyball or to coaching.  Clary and Liz, WCS 2009 Coaches of the Year, continue to demonstrate their passion for kids and sports.  Last year, having coached three teams, they collected three trophies – two with “Championship” on them.

While being criticized for retaining everyone who tried out for the Middle School Volleyball team, Coaches Best and Groenewold wanted all of the players to be a part of a team.

Clary and Liz have melded to form a caring and competitive coaching duo.  Once again, they find themselves in the driver’s seat heading into the playoffs.  The team received a bye through the first round and take on Berean Christian School in the semi-finals.

            Go Eagles!

Varsity Soccer:  Undefeated in League Play

The varsity soccer team has accomplished something no other team in WCS history has done.  It came as no surprise that the Senior-heavy, talented soccer clan would go without a loss.  Several players have been teammates since their elementary days.  The abilities and knowledge of teammates’ strengths was an obvious benefit to the First Place soccer team.

Led by Captains Andres Hortet and Danny Paez, the team enters the playoffs with confidence.  The staunch defense has provided power from the back for years.  Casey Paterson, Alex Bergmann, and Andrew Dashwood have helped the team coast to wins.

The team easily defeated opening round opponent FAU twice during the season.  The team’s only tie of the season, a 2-2 battle, came against likely championship opponent Yeshiva.

The championship game will be a challenge as the target is clearly placed on the back of the undefeated Eagles.

Athletes of the Month

Casey Patterson has led WCS to a record-setting accomplishment of an undefeated season.  His backfield leadership and play has not only minimized goals against the team, but also initiated the forward attack.  Casey is a team player who has shown commitment to WCS soccer since his membership on the 2002 elementary team.  Each year his play has improved, and now he has an incredible senior-year season to take with him for the rest of his life.  Casey has perennially demonstrated commitment, sportsmanship, and team play.

Running Cross-Country takes a self-driven spirit, focus, and a body that likes to be pushed.  It is not for the weak-minded or -bodied.  That is why Cali Gumpel does well.  Her athletic prowess is found throughout her family.

“She brings tremendous energy and spirit to the team,” Coach Bill Mitchell commented about the rookie.

Her presence is beneficial for teammates like Amanda Dill.  Amanda, who found herself running alone and ahead of other teammates over the past few seasons, has been the school’s ace runner.  Now the XC team has two very determined and exceptional runners to help each other and their teammates.

In Cali’s first big meet, she finished 16th out of more than 70 runners.

Congratulations to the Athletes of the Month, their teammates, and coaches!

Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel Recognize WCS Athletes

Several spring-sport athletes were duly awarded by the Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel newspapers for their accomplishments.  WCS athletes work tirelessly to perform better than others.  As their work yields results, county recognition is provided.  This spring season, several Eagle athletes were highlighted.

Kevin Goff’s hard work on the field and in the classroom during his senior year paid big dividends.  However, it was his diligence over several years which vaulted him ahead of others in the county to receive many feathers in his hat his senior year.

Laying aside his accolades from WCS (subject-area honors, Valedictorian, Golden Eagle Award, etc.), Kevin collected many trophies as his high school career came to a close.  Kevin was selected as a Scholar-Athlete by the Palm Beach Post.  In addition, Kevin was a finalist in the Sam Budnyk Award.  Kevin’s performance on the baseball diamond earned him repeat spots on the First Team Selections made by both the Palm Beach Post and Sentinel.

Alexandra Lavelanet was selected by the Palm Beach Post and the Sun-Sentinel for her excellence as both an athlete and a scholar.

Baseball players/brothers Bryan Clark and Tyler Clark received Second Team All-County status from the Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel, respectively.  Meanwhile, teammate J.J. Salazar collected “Honorable Mention” recognition from both newspapers.

As a sophomore with a .604 batting average, 32 runs and 38 stolen bases to boot, Lexie Machiela was chosen to Second Team All-County teams by both papers.

WCS is proud of these athletes and every athlete who seeks to honor the Lord with a right attitude and give it all they have.

I m p r o v e m e n t s

Continuing improvement in our programs will always be a part of our plans. Several recent discussions have prompted suggestions for shade for our outdoor spectators.  While field conditions have shown improvement through the efforts of the Mawn Family and our Chief Financial Officer, Don Stimely, we want to improve the conditions for the student-athletes and those who support them.  Seating shading would provide relief and protection.

Seating shade is one of many ideas which have been mentioned to assist in making WCS Athletics better, safer, and more comfortable.  Obviously, resources are needed.  If you would like to be a part of a group to reach this and/or other improvement needs, please contact Matthew Winters.  Your input into suggested improvements is wanted.  Your assistance in meeting those requests is desired, as well.

 2008-09 Athletes of the Month

Wellington Christian School, on a monthly basis throughout the school year, honors student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership, sportsmanship, and excellence.  We are proud of our students who exhibit their God-given talents in a Christ-like way.  We offer “Congratulations!” and “Thank You!” to the recipients.  They worked hard to better themselves and their team while showing admirable character during play.

March          Alexa Elkins           Norman Jaboiun

April             Cher Nicholson       Bryan Clark

Cher Nicholson and Bryan Clark rounded out the decorated athletes for the 2008-09 school year.  Cher, though a major participant in the success of the Championship Elementary volleyball team, earned this recognition through her contributions and sportsmanship on the Elementary basketball team.  Cher is a team player who strives to excel at everything she does.  She has been of tremendous value to all the teams on which she plays.

Graduate Bryan Clark will seek to demonstrate his abilities at the collegiate level.  Bryan will be a red-shirted freshman on Northwood University’s baseball team.  Bryan was a critical component on WCS’s 17-6 team.  The unique combination of three brothers on one team was a treat – especially when all three were talented starters.

Congratulations Bryan, Cher, and all of our “Athlete of the Month” recipients!

After school that day, we will recognize all members of the teams, present awards, and have a fun time enjoying ice cream.
The program will begin at 3:15.  Invitations have been mailed and can be located in the school offices.  Please RSVP by May 8th.

 Middle School Flag Football
Teacher, and now Coach, Josh Fallon initiated flag football play several months ago.  Intended for kids to throw the pigskin around after school, it has now developed into the schools first organized football team.  Many desire for tackle football to be a regular part of the Eagles’ athletic programs.  This team has at least cracked the ice.
Coach Fallon has helped carve a football place into WCS Athletics.  The competition is not easy, though.  As newcomers into the Palms Athletic Christian Conference football league, Mr. Fallon and players have jumped right into the fire.
Pedro Ojeda, Evan Stimely, and John Bowles lead the team.  These eighth grade students are honing their skills and exhibiting the characteristics necessary for the younger players.  Pedro has rapidly acquired the respect from opposing coaches and players with his impressive speed and agility.  In addition, Megan Kadel, Nick Feick, and Trey Callahan are key players on both sides of the ball.
Go Trailblazing EAGLES!!!
Athletes of the Month – February
It would come as no surprise that as the baseball season has rolled around, the name Kevin Goff would appear in this column.  Senior, Kevin recently threw another no-hitter, but his accomplishments during the month of February are the grounds for this recognition.  Kevin is a leader on and off the field.  He lends support to his teammates on the field every time he has a bat, ball, or glove in his hand.  However, his off-field leadership by helping his peers with tutoring shows his commitment to the team concept.
Thanks Kevin for your leadership and congratulations!
MacKenzie Leeder is deserving of the award for her role as vital contributor to the team’s drive for a PACC Championship title.  Mackenzie’s strong and consistent serves were key factors throughout the season and post-season.  Coaches Liz Best and Clary Groenewold are proud of all the team members.
Congratulations Mackenzie and Elementary Girls Volleyball!
Athletes of the Month – March
Norman Jaboiun, star basketball player for the 5th-6th Grade team, has received honors as Athlete of the Month for March.  Norman leads the team in steals with his quickness.
Coach Bill Mitchell said, “Norman is a hustler.  He works hard on offense and defense.”
To top things off, Norman exhibits a great attitude to his peers and coach. Congratulations!
For the Female Athlete of the Month of March
Alexa Elkins jumped in to the vacated pitching position to help her team go on a winning spre during a streak in March.  The seventh grade ace has a tremendous spirit and a definite focused mind needed by a pitcher.  Her game has steadily improved and is peeking when needed.   With tournament play around the corner, the team will rely on her abilities.  Alexa is not only prepared, but eager for these important upcoming games.
Good Job Alexa!

Softball Seeks Repeat Championship Game Appearance
Deja vous.  Things are looking like they were last year.  The girls’ softball team split with Morningside Academy during the season this year and last. Having lost the first and won the second.  The Lady Eagles will play Morningside Academy, again, in the semi-final match-up.  Last year, the team advanced to the championship and regional play after defeating Morningside in the opening round.
Things are looking promising for the team.  Despite a youthful team, the team has progressed as planned.  The team has developed at every position and has shown signs of being a team that will be competitive during its stretch into the playoffs.
Lexie Machiela is second in the county (among 1A-3A schools) in batting average with .617.  She leads the county in stolen bases.  Veronica Burgos, Sydney Shinn, Kelly Smith, and Alyssa Murakami are also among area schools in varying categories.
The teams’ greatest strength is its span of talent.  Though there are some obvious leaders and accomplished players, the biggest asset of the team is the amount of players who have stepped up and improved throughout the year.  While Lexie Machiela has been an obvious offensive leader, others have stepped up at the plate and on the field.  Alexa Elkins has taken lead as the pitcher, while Katie Mick - the outfield, and Sydney Shinn - behind the plate.
The team is all set for the challenges it will face in the playoffs.
Coaches
WCS continues to pursue qualified Christian coaches.  Interested applicants should contact Matthew Winters, mwinters@wellingtonchristian.org.

                                                                                                     January
8th Ranked Team in Florida Ready for Playoffs
The Boys’ Basketball team is ranked eighth in the state in their classification that includes nearly 100 schools.  They earned 20 wins in the season while setting numerous school records.  They are also on the verge of cracking the top 10 teams in the area (all classifications).  While numbers are nice to view, Coach Chuck Jackson is usually only concerned about one set of numbers – the ones on the scoreboard.
Coach Jackson and Coach Fred Brown are not so impressed with what is in the newspapers or on the internet.  They continue to remind the team that the recognition the team is finding is encouraging, but it is not part of their goals.
“Rankings don’t win games or championships,” Jackson pointed out.
To the contrary, the coaches noted that the notoriety of their success could be a distraction.  The coaches continue to bring focus to the next game and not what is in print.  The team is ready to achieve the goals established at the beginning of the year – succeeding in the playoffs.
3rd Annual Holiday Basketball Bash Championship Captured by Team
The 2008-09 Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up two of their 20 wins during the third annual Christmas Break tournament.  While some students were enjoying vacations, rest, and Christmas presents, Coach Chuck Jackson and crew were practicing and competing.
Guests Florida Bible and The Pine School played in the opening contest of the tournament, followed by a WCS – Community Christian School match-up.  Both games were competitive and determined a WCS – TPS finale.  At half-time of the Championship match, The Pines School found themselves tied with the favored Eagles.  However, tournament MVP John Reed, All-Tournament selection Robert Giarla, and the rest of the team proved to be too much for the nights.  John had set a tournament record the day before with 12 consecutive free throws.  He was the tournament’s leading scorer and dominating force around the baskets.   The second half of the last game was owned by Wellington’s powerful offense and stifling defense.
Watching the tournament, one could see why the Eagles season ended with a school record 20 wins and only four loses.  This team is now just the second team in all sports in school history to hit the 20-win mark.  With FHSAA limitations on number of contests, the small list of teams to reach this mark indicates the skill level of this team.  The 07-08 WCS Varsity Baseball team is the only other team to be on the list.
Athletes of Month – December
During the Month of December, John Reed averaged 17 points per game and was among the top leaders in the county.  He helped his basketball team to an undefeated month with seven wins.  He is one of the District’s best players.  The month of December included key victories against Dreyfoos, Cardinal Newman, and against three District opponents – all with John’s critical performances.  Congratulations!
The selection of Amy Nungesser as the Female Athlete of the Month for December was a relatively easy choice.  Her standout play was evident while watching her on the court and more evident when looking at her statistics.  She was the team leader in several categories including rebounds and points.  Coach Eric Spee commented Amy “supplied maximum effort throughout practice and games.”  Great Job to Amy who performed with excellence and sportsmanship!
          Athletes of Month – January
Danny “Lock-em Down” Paez earned Athlete of the Month honors for January for his consistent achievements in shutting down opponents.  Danny utilizes his quickness and court-awareness as he applies pressure to the other teams’ key scorers.  Several nicknames have stuck with him because of his speed, including “Lock ‘em Down” and “The Blur.”
Defense is not his only forte.  It would not be uncommon to see Danny putting up double-digits on the scoreboard from his steals, lay-ups, and three-point shots.  Congratulations, Danny!
Sarah Baldeo played on both the varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams.  She contributed as a small forward on the varsity team and as a power forward on the junior varsity squad.  Sarah was the leading scorer for the JV Lady Eagles and scored a season high 13 points in a big win against 2A Glades Day.
Congratulations Sarah on being selected as the Athlete of the Month for January.

Baseball and Softball Teams Looking for Return Trips to Championships
During the 07-08 year, WCS experienced a big bump in its athletic programs.  It was arguably the best year in the school’s history.  Currently, the 08-09 year is vying for that claim.
While both softball and baseball brought home District trophies last year, both want to bring home trophies with different words on them.  Coaches Mike Drahos and Matthew Winters led their baseball and softball teams, respectively, to Championship-game appearances.  The goals for this year begin as the same – to make it into the title match-up.  However, the coaches and players would like the words on this year’s trophies to be printed as “Champion” instead of “Runner-Up.”
Players are diligently preparing for the up-coming season.  Both teams have packed their schedules to acquire as much game experience as possible.  This season will be a challenge, as the teams will have many new faces on the roster.  The coaches are encouraged by what they have seen in practices already.
The baseball team will play, for a fourth straight year, at Roger Dean Stadium.  This stadium is the spring training center for the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.  Their farm teams use the facilities after the start of the Major Baseball League gets underway.  Our Eagles will play prior to one of their games on April 25.  Be sure to save that date for a wonderful day at the park.
Pictures Wanted
If you have taken pictures during games or practices, we would like to have a copy.  We may use these for newsletters, the Athlete Appreciation Banquet, etc.  Please drop off a disk with “Athletic Pictures” written on it.
Coaching Vacancies
As coaching positions become available, WCS encourages families to recommend quality coaches to fill these voids.  WCS has been honored with enthusiastic and experienced coaches.  The success of our programs revolves around leaders who want to nurture kids physically and spiritually.
If you or someone you know has an interest in coaching, please address inquiries to Matthew Winters, mwinters@wellingtonchristian.org , or 793-1017 ext. 2602.

                                                                                                          DECEMBER
Middle School Girls Basketball Wins PACC Championship
It was certainly a roller coaster ride this season for the Championship team.  The team won four games straight to open the season.  Then, the team dropped five of its last six games.  It was almost as if the team went on a bit of a vacation.  However, two of those five wins came against the number one seeded and Palms Athletic Christian Conference Runner-Up Summit Christian School.
The Lady Eagles squeaked by the last seeded Trinity Christian in the opening round to win 21 – 18.  As the post-season progressed, the team experienced several highs and lows in the semi-final game against Berean Christian School.  Cali Gumpel injured her wrist and was taken to the hospital.  However, Veronica Burgos scored 18 points as the team blew by the Dogs 32 – 11.
The positive momentum going into the championship game was in the favor of the Lady Eagles.  Unfortunately, the roller coaster took a quick dive in the early part of the first quarter.  Standout forward Veronica Burgos became sidelined after, what seamed to be, a minor collision.  She would sit out the remainder of the game.  Meanwhile, the opportunity was presented for the team to rally.  Courtney Callahan, Stephanie Wilson, Megan Kadel, and the rest of the team pushed through the middle part of the game, earning a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter.  Stephanie Weil, who entered for Veronica, played her best game of the season pulling down several rebounds.  Much of the persistent defensive trapping and offensive ball-handling came from guard Cher Nicholson.  In addition, key field goals and free throws from Stephanie Wilson and Coutrney Callahan helped WCS pull away from Summit Christian.
The entire team and Coach Sarah Powers are to be commended for their sportsmanship and accomplishments as the 2008-09 PACC Champions.
Elementary Soccer Wins PACC Championship in Shootout
Clary Groenewold and Liz Best knew they had a solid group of players going into the start of the season.  However, the two veteran coaches never took that for granted.  They practiced hard and taught them all.  Clary and Liz have done a phenomenal job over the years in developing and nurturing their athletes.  This season was no different.  The coaches were able to help new players with the sport of soccer, while tone the skills of the advanced players.
It is not uncommon nor was it a surprise to see Berean Christian and Wellington vying for a Championship title in soccer.  Both schools respect each other and foster talented athletes.  It was almost predictable to see these two teams facing each other during the last game.  In the past five years, Wellington has won six championship and two runner-up trophies in elementary and middle school soccer.  Meanwhile, Berean has won two championships and six-second place trophies.
Berean played beyond their season performances during the final match.  Jethro Pierre opened up the scoring early on in the contest. At the same time, it was also the last regulation goal for the Eagles.  Berean came back from the goal deficit in the second half to tie the game.  Key performances by Chris Aubry, Nick Feick, Brandon McMillan, and Chad Pierce (the team leaders) were vital in keeping the game close.  At the end of regulation, the match was dead even.  As it came down to a shootout, the Eagles showed their superior ability.  Berean scored just once on four attempts.  Keeper Jethro Pierre made two critical saves, and one shot went off the post.  WCS ended the game having scored on its first three of four penalty kick attempts.
Congratulations to our Elementary team on their successful year!
Varsity Boys Basketball on Pace for Record Setting Year
While the accomplishments mount for this skilled team, the season has just begun.  Coach Chuck Jackson will not let the high current ability override the need to advance the team to its fullest potential.  Although the boys’ basketball program has improved almost every year for the past decade, Coach Chuck Jackson is not a complacent leader.  He desires for the kids to reach the fullest point they can achieve, as players and as a team.
The team faces a tougher schedule this year, then any previous year.  Added to the list were 2A and 3A schools such as Dreyfoos, Cardinal Newman, and King’s Academy.  The team has already defeated 2008 District Champion Lake Worth Christian, King’s, and Dreyfoos.  These accomplishments are only indications of Jackson’s plans.  The team is aware of their strength and has noticed shortcomings in these victories.  They have noticed there is much to gain in winning and losing.  The goal of the team is to advance to the FHSAA State Final Four - a lofty goal, but not a far-fetched one.
Returning starters Gabe Lopez, Robert Giarla, and Andres Hortet have improved and will need to take leadership roles this year.  Returning members Camillo Hortet, Danny Paez, and David Witwer have already stepped up their game in the team’s early season success.  While the team is off to a 5 – 0 start, it is the finish that is most important.  Earning a 20-win season is within their grasp, but taking each game one at a time must remain the focus.  The team’s plethora of talent must continue to cultivate should the team attain its potential goals.
                                                                                                        NOVEMBER
ATHLETES OF THE MONTH - SEPTEMBER
Recognized in a chapel/assembly, the Middle School Soccer “Diamond Offense” and Christina Firestone were honored as Athletes of the Month for September.
The “Diamond Offense” (Pedro Ojeda, Chad Pierce, Jethro Pierre, and Marcus Alberdi) combined for 33 goals in ten games.  Marcus scored five goals in a single game, Pedro scored in seven different games, Chad contributed a goal or an assist in seven games, and Jethro was 3rd in goals scored even having spent time as a goalkeeper.
Christina Firestone was selected as the Female Athlete of the Month for September for her outstanding leadership and teamwork on the Middle School volleyball team.  Christina helped take her team to the Palms Athletic Christian Conference Championship game.
            Congratulations student-athletes!
ATHLETES OF THE MONTH – OCTOBER
The highly motivated and coach-able Kayla Ricardy earned honors for Athlete of the Month for October.
“Kayla is well-disciplined and produced very few errors throughout the course of the entire season, let alone the month of October,” Varsity Volleyball Coach Mike St Myer stated.
Kayla is outstanding in character on and off the court.  She led the team in service points and digs.  Congratulations, Kalya!
On the guys’ side, Brandon Melvin is the recipient of Athlete of the Month.  Brandon set a personal best time for running 5000 meters at the district Cross-Country meet.  During the final race of the year, Brandon beat his previous best time by almost two minutes.  Coach Bill Mitchell is proud of all his runners and commented on how each improved and remained committed.  Coach Mitchell noted Brandon’s efforts and accomplishments, stating, “Brandon is a fine young man and remarkable athlete.”

JV Basketball Added to List of Offered Sports
With the growth and interest in basketball from girls in grades 7-12, a Junior Varsity Basketball team has been established.  Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, Eric Spee, saw an influx of interested girls’ participants at tryouts.  His desire is to see all the girls play and to help contribute to the overall program.  Through some generous and diligent efforts, games were scheduled at the JV level.  Players from the middle school level may also be called upon to help round out a full roster.
“This is how we have foreseen the growth of our programs,” Athletic Director Matthew Winters commented.
“It is hard to believe how successful and full our athletic program is when you consider the young age of our school.  We offer as many, and in some cases, more sports than schools of our size and even larger,” Winters added.
Wellington Christian School competes in inter-scholastic sports beginning at age five.  Intra-mural sports begin at the first grade.  The addition of sports in the Athletic Department is not taken lightly due to, among many things, the frustration opposing schools experience when teams are disbanded after game contracts and arrangements are made.  The interest many students have shown in girls’ basketball goes beyond the isolated requests for less popular sports.  It is the hope of the athletic department to continue to develop our existing programs and add additional programs when possible.
Varsity Soccer Team Makes First District Championship Game Appearance
The varsity soccer team reached new heights during the 2008-09 season.  The culmination of it all came at the final game of the playoffs.  Joey Coleman played outstanding as the goaltender.  Joey along with the continually improving defense including Andrew Dashwood, JJ Salazar, Casey Patterson, and Ben Kaufman helped the defense peak.  Meanwhile, the mid-field and offense clicked on all cylinders.
Dreyfoos School of the Arts came into the championship game undefeated.  This talented team included an Under-17 National team player.  Dreyfoos scored an early goal, catching the Eagles not fully warmed up.  Dreyfoos took control of most of the early part of the game.
Despite the Eagles control of the second half, School of the Arts managed to gain a lead 3 -1.  The underdog Eagles had given all they had and played superior to all other teams in the season, minus Dreyfoos.
WCS shortened the lead to one after a goal by Danny Paez with ten minutes remaining in the match.  With a 3-2 deficit and time running short, the Eagles had to take chances.  The midfielders Andres Hortet and Gary Gordillo helped shift the ball up front for attackers.  Joey Coleman switched jerseys to help push forward for last-ditch efforts.
The extremely talented Eagles ended falling short of the highly skilled Dreyfoos.  However, it was evident the ability of the WCS varsity soccer team continues to develop and reach new heights.
Congratulations to all members of the varsity soccer for helping to earn WCS’s first varsity District Championship appearance.
 Cross-Country Team Finishes Fast
Under the tutelage of Bill Mitchell, the Cross-Country program reached its best results in a decade.  Throughout the course of the year, the team managed victories over several large public schools and many private schools.  Rookie Coach Mitchell stepped in and stepped up when Pamela Blank had to step out just prior to the start of the season.  Mrs. Blank’s efforts over the past few years helped lead up to Coach Mitchell’s successful season.
Both coaches, Blank and Mitchell, would be the first to note that it has been the desire of the runners that has led to the program’s success.  Amanda Dill, Chase Hartmann, Michael Richmond, Victoria Thuss, and Abigail Shaffner recruited their friends to join them this year -and a fantastic job they did.  Coupled with their experience, the recruits bolstered the program in numbers and in team results.  The addition of Maise brothers (Nathan and Jacob), the David’s (David Noth and David Manoharan), and Brandon Melvin proved pivotal in the boys’ program.  With the unfortunate and nagging injury to Chase Hartmann (2-time Most Valuable Runner), the new runners picked up the slack and the pace.  Meanwhile, Olivia Brown, Sofia de la Camera, and Emilia Lujan started running to help the girls’ side achieve some of the schools best cross-country times.
Coach Mitchell has worked hard to help these athletes “be the best they can be.”  No one can be more proud of the accomplishments of these runners than Mr. Mitchell.  The “flutter kicks,” sprints, and his push on them have provided them the experience and success they can now proudly carry.

Middle School Girls Basketball Team Having a Ball - Winning
Currently, the middle school girls’ basketball team has won four of their first five contests.  Coach Sarah Powers has directed Courtney Callahan, Cher Nicholson, and teammates to a strong start.  Some of those “teammates’” names may sound familiar:  Megan Kadel was the goalkeeper for the soccer team, Stephaine Wilson was the left midfielder for soccer, and Veronica Burgos played on the MS volleyball team.
While reaching the midway point of the season, Coach Powers has recognized the status of the team.  She has noted the areas of weakness and has praised the teams’ strengths.  Coach Powers is not letting the early success distract the ultimate goals for the team.
The team continues its venture toward a championship.  The playoffs for both MS girls’ and boys’ basketball begin the week of December 1, with championship games on Saturday, December 6.
Varsity Cheerleading
Correction:  Last article stated, “No seniors will be on the team this year.”  Indeed, three seniors are on the varsity cheerleading squad this year.
Seniors Veronica Vela, Christine Siciliano, and Micah Peters have cheered for a combined 13 years on the varsity cheerleading team.  Micah has been a cheerer since sixth grade (a feat worth recognition since sixth graders are generally not permitted to participate on varsity teams).  Hayley Hurd was the coach of the team when Micah began her road to excellence in cheerleading.  Now, Miss Peters has earned the status of Captain and leads the squad.
Twelfth graders, Veronica Vela and Christine Siciliano, are co-captains on this year’s team.  Both of these pleasant ladies have cheered on the varsity squad since their sophomore years.  Christine earned Athlete of the Month honors last December for her leadership and excellenece.
All three girls have identified the position which they hold as seniors.  They recognize their need to pass the baton (or pom poms) to the next group of girls.  Five new girls have joined the team this year and need the direction of Micah, Christine, and Vern to perpetuate the level of excellence in the cheer program.

Varsity Soccer Continues Success Story                                            October
Varsity soccer takes a 10-2 record into the play-offs.  The players are anxious for their first match-up against Community Christian Academy.  The Eagles defeated CCA twice during the season and hopes to replicate the same results to make their way into the Championship game.
Should WCS win on Tuesday, they will likely face Dreyfoos in the Championship on Thursday.  This excitement should bid well for the team and the high school retreat.  Administration has made contingency plans to take fellow students from the retreat to support the team.
Praise the Lord for the success and keep it up WCS!

WCS Hosts 2nd Annual Cross-Country Invitational
Bill Mitchell’s weekend preparations of the course at Okeeheelee Park paved the way for his successful runners.
“The hours of preparation were well worth it,”  Coach Mitchell said.
Lake Worth Christian, Glades Day, The Shepherd’s School, Berean Christian, and our own Eagles competed in the annual event.  This twilight event was an idea which hoped, and did, see parents come out who may not have been able to escape work.  The 6:00 start time also allowed for cooler weather for the runners.
Amanda Dill won the event for the girls, with Sofia de la Camara coming in second.  Amanda, Sofia, and their: Olivia Brown, Emilia Lujan, Gabby Sanchez, and Victoria Thuss helped WCS capture the title for the girls.
With Chase Hartman recuperating from an injury, the boy’s team consisting of Jacob Maise, Nathan Maise, David Noth, David Manoharan, and Brandon Melvin (finishing respectively) beat out all the schools except Lake Worth Christian.
The Cross-country team is a hard-working group of athletes, which continues to develop and perform exceptionally.  Great job!
We would like to thank the many individuals who helped make this event safely happen, including: Robert Giarla, Brian Clonch, Dan Roselli, Mr. Mike Giarla, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Noth, David Dill, and Mr. and Mrs. Hartman.
   Varsity Volleyball Topping it Off
Two weeks running, WCS has appeared in the “Also Considered” list of the TOP TEN VOLLEYBALL TEAMS IN THE COUNTY.  Currently our girls have a 10-4 record.  Kayla Ricardy is having a stellar year and has remained a constant anchor on the team.  The friendship and years of play in multiple sports between Lexie Machiela and Alyssa Murakami is paying dividends for the Lady Eagles.
The team is nearing the conclusion of the season and is likely to face Berean Christian in the opening round of the play-offs.  WCS soundly defeated BCS the first time these two teams faced each other.  Before play-offs begin, they will have a rematch at host Berean.
WCS is working hard and planning to improve their record against the local opponent.

 Middle School Volleyball:  Runner-Ups
Congratulations to the MS V-ball team!  They finished in the runner-up spot in the PACC tournament this past Saturday.  Great job girls and coaches!

Middle School Soccer Team Wins Four of Last Five
The team’s five game undefeated streak came to an end in the PACC play-off tournament.  Though the Eagles gave Trinity their only two losses of the year, TCA won out against WCS in the playoffs.  Trinity then went on to win the PACC Championship.

  Winters Sports’ Practices Underway
Please be sure all necessary forms have been completely and properly submitted prior to practicing.  These forms can be downloaded from the WCS web site, or found in a hard copy of the athletic handbook.  WCS Athletic Handbooks can be picked up in the school offices.
Middle School Girls Basketball Team is “Powered” Up
Coached by Sarah Powers, the team is gearing up for a successful year.  Tremendous anticipation surrounds this team that has overflowing talent and coaching skill.  Coach Powers was a former player at Palm Beach Atlantic University.  She is spending her first year at WCS as a teacher and coach.  Her enthusiasm, energy, and knowledge are sure to be of assistance to the girls’ basketball program.

Middle School Boys Basketball Team Focusing on Awaiting Challenges
Coach Bob Koepka, last year’s championship game appearing coach, will work with the middle school boys again.  Last years’ team went beyond expectations, and they hope to build from there.  Returning players Jeremy Panakos, Evan Stimely, and John Bowles are expected to be major contributors to the team.  New faces will join the squad, while Coach Koepka’s experience will be critical to the underdogs again this year.

Experience and Youth: Assets of the Varsity Cheerleaders
While no seniors will be on the team this year, the varsity members do have the experience.  The cheerleaders have started their intense preparations for the upcoming season.  These driven girls practice behind the scenes and provide critical support to the Varsity Boys Basketball Team.  The girls are skilled in gymnastics and use their coordination, strength, rhythm, and balance during their routines.
Returning Assistant Coach Ashley Ralston will assume the head-coaching role for the 2008-09 season.  Ashley has been a member of the PBAU cheerleading squad for the past three years, while also working with the Eagles cheerleaders.  She is a blessing to the girls with her testimony, leadership, and expertise.  In addition, Vivi Sanchez will assist her.  Vivi continues to be one of WCS’s most loyal and gracious parents.
We want to encourage these encouragers.  The cheerleading team works hard and are always there as the sixth persons on the court.  Their contributions, through their performances, are a great benefit to the school.  In addition, the sport of cheerleading, which they enjoy, provides an opportunity for them to show their God-given talents which they earnestly seek to develop.
Come watch and support them, even though the basketball game may be a distraction.

 Eagles In Training (EITs)
Girls, in grades 3-6 will begin practicing the week of 10/13.  These cheerers will support the Middle School boys’ basketball team in hopes of helping them to victory.  These young girls are always a joy to watch and provide the needed enthusiasm in the Eagles’ Nest.

Elementary (5th-6th) Soccer has Kicked Off
Clary Groenewold or Liz best have started their quest for another championship.  Soccer, a staple of WCS sports, has experienced long-lasting success at all levels.  The Spring Soccer season has helped cultivate the wealth of soccer talent.  This season’s expectations are no less than a PACC Championship.  Once again, Coach Best and Coach Groenewold carry with them a sharp team into the season.  This is not to take anything away from these coaches.  They do not take things for granted.  They realize no team is going to bow down to the soccer dynasty at Wellington Christian.  Be assured the team will be working hard to earn a title that is within their grasps.
